We don’t often talk about what’s going right when you’re busting your ass to get your startup off the ground. Most of our ADD-filled days are consumed with what can be improved. We talk about how to help solve our customers problems (even before they know they have a problem). We talk to prospects about how the solution we provide will help to be successful in attracting higher quality candidates. We want to show our investors that they were right to believe in us. We want to make our startup successful and for all this blood, sweat and tears to pay off.
We also want to make our startup successful because we love our solution so much that we want to share it with the whole wide world. Startups are hard. It’s the people who make the startup culture worth it. Nothing is for sure. Everyday, one must determine how to best utilize your time, your most precious resource.
Today is The Good Jobs 2 year anniversary.
Over the past 2 years, I have been fortunate to work with some amazing people and companies. I’m looking at you, Zappos. I’m reflecting on how lucky I am to work with a team who believes in our mission and wakes up every day with enthusiasm and drive to make today count. My partner and co-founder, Anne believes in me. She supports my stubborn (sometimes totally crazy) ideas, my desire to work in ways that work for me, and genuinely wants me to be successful. Over the past few years, we have built up a reserve of trust, goodwill and kindness. A wise man once told me that a partnership is like a marriage. Well, I’ve never been married, so the comparison wasn’t met with a true depth of understanding. We’ve been through a lot together and I feel fortunate to call her my partner. She’s got my back. We want the other one to be successful — with the definition of success that reflects who we are — not just what others call success.
Every company says “People are our best asset”. “We work hard play hard”. “We value our people”. “We put people first”. All those buzzwords and buzz phrases have been used on every career site since the internet was invented. How do we put people first? Why do we put people first? We need new ways to express what is true about the real people who work there. Authenticity, truth and transparency are harder — because you have to really look at what you’re doing and fix what’s not working. But the truth always comes out…
Startups have lots of challenges. Having a partner who believes in you, trusts you (and who you trust) gives you a great competitive advantage.
